List, the third.

So, in my boredom yesterday, I went through old files. Lo and behold, I found evidence of my former self at fourteen! It was gross, really. Like being sucked into an emo time machine, I sifted through the files with a look of utter disgust etching itself into my face. I remembered when my wall was plastered in posters of dudes sporting ‘guyliner’, hoodies and tight pants. Spending days amongst those posters, blasting music in my dank little room. Truly horrible. So many x’s, fake-“cool” screen names, and myspace pictures… so ghastly I’d probably only show the closest of friends. Instead, I’ll share a tiny bit of what I found!

Top five bands I used to like when I was fourteen

  • My Chemical Romance

  • The first time I saw them, I really hadn’t had an appreciation of them. My dad took my brother and I to see Green Day, and My Chemical Romance were one of the bands who opened. Needless to say, weeks after my first stadium concert, I was walking around singing Thankyou for the Venom to myself. I even remember seeing them walk past, my brother screaming ‘OH MY GOD, IT’S RAY TORO!’ and scrambling around to find something to throw at his enormous afro to get his attention. So after that, it was MCRmy, watching Life on the Murder Scene over and over again, and dancing around to Headfirst for Halos, or after a particularly grueling day, turning my little pink CD player up to 11 and singing along to I’m Not Okay.

I still like them, and listen to them from time to time, but I don’t have that obscene fangirl obsession I once had. If it weren’t for Mikey Way, I probably wouldn’t be playing bass. They may be a huge discredit on my account, but I like to see them as the springboard into the vast awesome (awesomeness?) that is my musical tastes now.

  • Fall Out Boy

  • Oh man. Same thing with My Chemical Romance. Pete Wentz inspired me, not with his lyrics, but lack of musical talent. I thought “If someone that shit at bass can be in a successful band, so can I!” Plus, Patrick Stump is a beast of a man. Joe Trohman gave me a lot of laughs with his sheer Jewry. And Andy, I imagine, is probably a pleasant dude.

  • Panic! At the Disco

  • So the exclamation point was there when I first listened to them, and there it shall stay. I thought they were so cool. Now, looking back, they’re not so cool. They looked like Shakespearean drag queens, who played lutes and hung out in titty bars. I remember getting swept up in the excitement of the release of Pretty. Odd, and after all that build up, I only liked a couple songs. Some of them were just fucking whack, but I like that they’ve experimented with their sound and their music, and (somewhat) pulled it off.

  • Green Day

  • I still like them. I’d probably give my right arm to see American Idiot on Broadway, too. Billy Joel taught me the art of “Fuck you”, all in the narrative form that is American Idiot the album.

  • Motion City Soundtrack

  • Don’t really have much to say. But The Future Freaks Me Out was a pretty good song. Oh, and the singer’s high-pitch always blew my mind. It was almost as if the guy had no balls.

End of list, but I also wanted to add, My Chemical Romance’s new song “NA NA NA” is on repeat right now. Day two. Fuck yeah.
